El Salvador is like no other destination in Central America; it’s a place where lush mountain forests meet pristine beaches, and bustling city life merges with centuries-old traditions. Thanks to significant improvements in public safety, it has become one of the most appealing countries to visit in the region. From one day to the next, the vibe can completely change as you travel from the cool highlands to the surf-friendly shores. Recently, we had our Finnish friend visit us, so we took the opportunity to explore El Salvador with fresh eyes—acting as tourists in our own backyard. Here’s how our week looked:

Day 1: Start of El Salvador 7 day itinerary - Arrival in San Salvador & Pupusa Night

As the first day of our El Salvador 7 day itinerary, we started our trip in the capital city, San Salvador. After a long flight, we picked up our Finnish friend from the airport and drove straight to Los Planes de Renderos, a local hotspot famous for its pupuserias.

  • Arrival: Best and cheapest way of geting to your hotel is Uber. Also we recommend to rent a car to have more freedom to travel around. You can rent your car for example at *Rentalcars.

  • Pupusa Kick-Off: Enjoy a true Salvadoran welcome by indulging in pupusas—thick corn tortillas stuffed with cheese, beans, or chicharrón.

  • Where to Go: We chose El Atico in Los Planes for its unbeatable quality and price.

Tip: Pupusas are El Salvador’s national dish—order a few different fillings (cheese, beans, loroco) to sample the variety!

Day 2: Mountain Escape in Los Naranjos & Juayua Food Festival

Early the next morning, swap the city for the fresh air of the mountains. Los Naranjos (depending on the traffic 1,5-2 h drive away) is a forest wonderland that feels like stepping into another world.

  • Scenic Drive: Winding roads lead you to the cool highlands of Los Naranjos.

  • Where to Stay: We checked into *Los Naranjos Townhouses, nestled amidst lush greenery—our go-to spot for its tranquil vibe.

  • Local Breakfast: Stop at a humble roadside eatery for a classic Salvadoran breakfast (eggs, plantains, beans, and tortillas).

  • Juayua Food Festival: Drive to Juayua for the weekend food festival. Savor the local barbecue stalls and soak in the lively market atmosphere.

  • Coffee Break: Recharge at Bourbon Coffee Roasters for a taste of El Salvador’s growing specialty coffee culture.

  • Evening Activity: Catch a local football game back in town, then treat yourself to more pupusas!

  • Optional things to do: *Santa Ana Volcano tour. We did this last stay in El Salvador and it is totally worth it!

Tip: Juayua’s food festival runs every weekend. Arrive early for the best selection of barbecued meats and fresh juices or micheladas.

Day 3: Waterfall Adventures & Cozy Bonfire Evenings

Today is all about experiencing El Salvador’s natural splendor. After a hearty breakfast at *Los Naranjos Town houses, head out on an unforgettable waterfall tour.

  • *Seven Waterfall & Chorros de la Calera Tour (9 AM–12 PM): Trek through lush greenery, discover hidden falls, and even take a dip in the refreshing pools.

  • Lunch at Jardin de Celeste: A charming garden setting with delicious local dishes—perfect for recharging after a morning of adventure.

  • Sweet Treats: Grab some traditional sweetbreads on your way back to enjoy with coffee later.

  • Bonfire Night: As the sun sets, cozy up around a bonfire at Los Naranjos Townhouse. Sip coffee, share stories, and let the sounds of nature lull you into relaxation.

Tip: Bring water shoes and a waterproof camera to fully enjoy the waterfall tour—some trails can get slippery!

Day 4: Beach Bliss at San Blas & Lively Night in El Tunco

Time to trade mountain mists for ocean breezes. Make your way to the coast for a day of sun, sea, and laid-back vibes.

  • San Blas Beach: Book a beachside stay. This quieter beach is perfect for swimming—no rocks, fewer crowds.

    • Local Treats: Cool down with Salvadoran street ice cream and fresh coconut water.

    • Music Tip: Bring portable speakers to enhance the beach atmosphere.

  • Sunset Views: Marvel at the brilliant hues painting the sky—sunsets here are spectacular.

  • Night Out in El Tunco: As evening falls, drive to El Tunco for a vibrant nightlife scene with bars, restaurants, and live music.

Tip: Weekdays are ideal at San Blas—less crowded, more beach to yourself!

Day 5: Whale Watching & Sunset Serenity

Embark on a marine adventure and see El Salvador from a whole new perspective.

  • Whale Watching from Los Cobanos (We paid $40/Person, but took our own car to the spot. If you want tour + transportation from San Salvador, you can book your tour at *Get your Guide.): While sightings aren’t guaranteed, dolphins, turtles, and flying fish are often part of the show!

    • Bonus Swim: Many tours allow you to jump in for a refreshing dip in the ocean.

  • Afternoon Chill: Head back to San Blas for another round of golden-hour beach time.

  • Dinner with a View: Finish your day at Hola Betos in La Libertad, known for its stunning ocean panoramas and fresh seafood dishes.

Tip: Arrive at Hola Betos early; it’s a popular spot and doesn’t take reservations.

Day 6: Urban Exploration in San Salvador & Puerto de Diablo

Return to the city for a taste of El Salvador’s emerging cafe culture and a dash of coastal artistry.

  • Cafe Hopping in San Salvador: Explore trendy coffee shops—sample locally roasted beans and unique latte creations.

  • Puerto de Diablo: A relaxed coastal area offering local art, fresh seafood, and laid-back vibes.

  • Mexican Flavors: End the day with dinner at Señor Birria, our all-time favorite for mouthwatering tacos and birria.

Tip: San Salvador’s cafe scene is growing fast—ask locals (like us) for new openings or hidden coffee spots.

Day 7: Ruta Panoramica & Historic Centro

On your final day, soak up El Salvador’s scenic and historic sides.

  • Ruta Panoramica Drive: Enjoy sweeping views of the countryside.

    • Santa Cruz Stop: Grab a coffee while admiring breathtaking lake vistas.

    • Optional Visit: Check out a nearby Mariposario (Butterfly House) if you have time.

  • Centro Historico: Head back to San Salvador’s historic center, where colonial architecture meets modern-day life. Wander through plazas, snap photos of colorful facades, and soak up the city’s buzzing atmosphere.

  • Optional: Discover the rich history of Centro Histórico on an engaging walking tour. Every time we travel, we make it a point to explore the city on foot—it’s the best way to truly immerse yourself in the local culture and history. Book your San Salvador Centro Histórico tour on *Get Your Guide today.

Tip: Enjoy a drink at the new rooftop spot in town called La Doña.
